TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Kasa smart plug offline in the app means it has lost its Wi-Fi connection.
Restart your router, unplug the Kasa plug for 10 seconds and plug back in.
If the plug reconnects within 2 minutes, the issue was a temporary Wi-Fi dropout.

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the Kasa plug

Unplug the Kasa smart plug from the wall socket, wait 10 seconds, and plug back in.
Allow 60–90 seconds for the plug to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Check the Kasa app to see whether the device status changes from Offline to On or Off.

  2. Restart your router

Unplug your router for 30 seconds and plug back in.
Wait for the internet connection to fully restore (usually 2–3 minutes).
Then restart the Kasa plug as in step 1 and check the app.

  3. Check Wi-Fi signal strength at the plug location

Kasa smart plugs require a stable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal.
Move the plug to a socket closer to the router temporarily to see if it connects.
If it does, the original location has a weak signal — consider a Wi-Fi extender.

  4. Confirm the plug is on a 2.4 GHz network

Kasa EP10, EP25, and most Kasa smart plugs only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
If your router uses the same SSID (name) for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, ensure the plug can reach the 2.4 GHz signal.
Temporarily disable 5 GHz on the router during setup if needed.

  5. Reset and re-add the plug to the Kasa app

If the plug remains offline, factory reset it by pressing and holding the button on the plug for 5 seconds until the LED flashes amber and green alternately.
Then re-add the device in the Kasa app using the + button.
    Follow the Wi-Fi setup prompts.

  6. Check the Kasa server status

Visit the TP-Link Kasa status page or search for Kasa outage reports.
If Kasa servers are down, plugs may show offline in the app even when locally connected.
In this case, direct control via the physical button still works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kasa smart plug offline every morning — why?

Daily offline events usually indicate the router assigns a new IP address to the plug via DHCP and the Kasa app briefly shows it as offline during reconnection.
Assign a static IP or DHCP reservation to the Kasa plug in your router settings to prevent this.

Kasa plug shows offline but the light on the plug is solid green — cause?

A solid green light means the plug is powered but not connected to the Kasa cloud.
This can happen when internet access is lost.
Check whether the router has an active internet connection — the plug may be on the local network but unable to reach Kasa servers.

Kasa smart plug goes offline after every power cut — what to do?

After a power cut, the Kasa plug should reconnect automatically within 2 minutes of power restoration.
If it consistently fails to reconnect after power cuts, the router is still starting up when the plug tries to connect — the plug reconnects faster than the router.
This usually resolves itself; no action needed.
