Filter Alert
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: MinorWhat it means
A Dyson filter alert means the filter is dirty and restricting airflow.
Remove the filter, wash it under cold water, and let it dry for 24 hours before reinserting.
How to Fix It
-
Locate and remove the filter
On Dyson V-series cordless vacuums, the filter is at the top of the main body (twist to remove).
On upright models, there may be both a pre-motor and post-motor filter. -
Tap out loose debris
Before rinsing, gently tap the filter over a bin to dislodge loose dust.
This makes washing more effective. -
Rinse under cold water
Hold the filter under cold running water and squeeze gently until the water runs clear.
Do not use soap or put the filter in a dishwasher. -
Dry completely — 24 hours minimum
This is the most important step.
Place the filter in a warm, airy spot to dry for at least 24 hours.
A wet filter used in the machine will damage the motor and fail to clear the alert. -
Refit and test
Once fully dry, reinsert the filter and twist to lock.
Power the machine on — the filter alert should be gone and suction should improve noticeably. -
Replace if damaged
If the filter is torn, has holes, or the alert persists after a thorough wash and dry, replace it.
Dyson filters are inexpensive and should be replaced annually.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my Dyson filter?
Dyson recommends washing the filter at least once a month.
Pet owners or heavy users should wash it every two weeks.
Can I speed up drying the filter with a hairdryer?
No — Dyson advises against using any heat to dry the filter.
Heat can distort the filter material.
Air drying at room temperature is the only safe method.
My Dyson filter alert is still on after washing and drying — what do I do?
If the alert persists with a clean dry filter, try resetting the machine by switching it off and back on.
If still lit, the filter may be damaged and needs replacement.
