Brush Roll Indicator
Shark Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
The Shark brush roll indicator light turns red when the brush roll is jammed with hair or debris.
Turn off the vacuum, clear the brush roll, and restart.
How to Fix It
-
Turn off and unplug the vacuum
Never attempt to clear the brush roll while the machine is running.
Turn it off completely and unplug from the wall. -
Lay the vacuum flat
Tilt the Shark upright back or lay the robot-style cleaner head flat to access the brush roll cover.
-
Remove the brush roll cover
On most Shark models the brush roll cover clips or screws off from the base of the cleaner head.
Remove it to access the brush roll. -
Cut and remove tangled hair
Use scissors to cut along the length of the brush roll and pull away all tangled hair, thread, and debris.
Both end bearings and the centre are common jam points. -
Spin the brush roll by hand
After clearing, spin the brush roll by hand.
It should rotate freely and smoothly.
If it is stiff, clean the end bearings with a cotton bud. -
Replace the cover and restart
Refit the brush roll cover, plug in and switch on.
The indicator light should return to green once the brush roll is spinning freely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the brush roll indicator stay red after clearing the blockage?
If the indicator stays red after cleaning, the brush roll motor may have tripped its thermal protection.
Switch off, wait 5 minutes, and try again.
How often should I clean the Shark brush roll?
Clean the brush roll every 1–2 months, or more often if you have long-haired people or pets in the home.
Hair tangles quickly and reduces cleaning performance.
Can I replace the Shark brush roll myself?
Yes — Shark brush rolls are user-replaceable.
Search for your Shark model number to find a compatible replacement.
Most brush rolls clip in without tools.
