Affected Models
- Maytag Front Load Washer
- Maytag Maxima Washer
- Maytag 2000 Series Washer
- Maytag Performance Series Washer
Common Causes
- Blocked pump filter — lint, coins, or debris slowing drainage
- Kinked or partially blocked drain hose
- Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe creating a siphon
- Blocked household drain standpipe
- Weak or failing drain pump
How to Fix It
-
Clean the pump filter.
Open the front access panel at the bottom of the machine.
Place a shallow tray underneath.
Slowly unscrew the pump filter cap — water will come out.
Remove the filter and clear all lint, coins, or debris.
Replace and run a Drain/Spin cycle. -
Check the drain hose.
Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect the drain hose.
Straighten any kinks.
The hose should be inserted no more than 15 cm into the standpipe — inserting it deeper creates a siphon that slows drainage. -
Check the standpipe.
Pour a bucket of water into the standpipe.
If it drains slowly, the household drain is partially blocked — not a washing machine fault.
Contact a plumber. -
Press Pause/Cancel to clear the error and restart.
After cleaning the filter, press Pause/Cancel twice to clear the F21 code.
Select Drain/Spin and run it to confirm the machine now drains correctly.
When to Call a Professional
If the pump filter is clean and the drain hose is clear but F21 keeps returning, the drain pump is wearing out and draining too slowly — have a technician replace the pump.
Frequently Asked Questions
Maytag washer shows F21 and stops mid-cycle with water in the drum — what do I do?
Clean the pump filter first — this is the most common cause. After cleaning, press Pause/Cancel twice to clear the error, then select Drain/Spin to remove the remaining water from the drum.
How do I access the pump filter on my Maytag front-load washer?
Look for a small rectangular access panel on the front lower section of the machine, usually on the right side. Pry it open with a flat screwdriver. The round pump filter cap is inside — turn it counter-clockwise to remove.
