F9E1

Maytag Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What it means

Maytag front load washer F9E1 is the drainage code.
Maytag's exact wording: 'This error code indicates the washer is unable to drain correctly.'
The published checks are all owner-doable: drain hose insertion depth, the air gap between the hose and the drainpipe, the drain pump filter behind the bottom dispenser drawer, and the small drain holes inside the door seal.

Affected Models

  • Maytag Maxima front-load washers (MHW series)
  • Maytag 2000 Series front-load washers
  • Maytag stackable front-load combos (MHW with matching dryer)
  • Other Maytag front-load HE washers (top-load Maytag washers use different drainage codes)
  • Same F9E1 front-load drain code appears on Whirlpool Duet and Amana front-load washers (shared platform)

Common Causes

  • Drain hose pushed too deep into the drainpipe (more than 4.5 inches / 113 mm)
  • No air gap between drain hose and drainpipe — hose is sealed against the pipe
  • Drain pump filter clogged with lint, coins, or small debris
  • Drain holes inside the rubber door seal blocked
  • Drain pump impeller jammed by a hair pin, coin, or zipper pull

How to Fix It

  1. Check drain hose insertion depth.

Maytag's exact wording: 'Ensure the drain hose does not extend more than 4.5" (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub.'
Pull the washer out an inch and check where the drain hose enters the standpipe.
If it's pushed deeper than 4.5 inches, withdraw it back to the correct depth and secure with the supplied hose hook.

  2. Verify the air gap.

Maytag: 'The drain hose should be loose yet secure. There must be a gap between the drain hose and the drain pipe to allow air to flow through.'
If the hose is taped, sealed, or tightly wedged into the standpipe, the washer can't drain — it siphons air-locked.
Loosen the connection so air can flow around the hose at the standpipe opening.

  3. Clean the drain pump filter.

Maytag: 'The Drain Pump filter is located behind the bottom dispenser drawer (on some models). This filter should be cleaned occasionally.'
Pull the bottom kickplate or dispenser drawer off the front of the unit.
Place a shallow tray underneath, unscrew the filter cap counter-clockwise, and pull the filter out.
Clean off lint, coins, and any small objects.
    Refit and tighten.

  4. Clear the door seal drain holes.

Maytag: 'There are small drain holes inside the door seal. If they get clogged, the washer/dryer may not drain well.'
Open the door, peel back the rubber door boot, and look for the small (pencil-tip-sized) drain holes around the bottom of the seal.
Clear any lint or hair with a toothpick or zip tie.

When to Call a Professional

All four of Maytag's published F9E1 checks are owner-doable.
Only schedule service if the drain hose is correctly positioned, the air gap is present, the pump filter is clean, and the door seal drain holes are clear — and F9E1 still appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the Maytag front load drain pump filter?

Maytag recommends 'occasionally' on their support page without a fixed schedule — once every 4 to 6 months is the practical answer.
Sooner if you wash items that shed heavily (fluffy towels, pet bedding, blankets that pill) or if you've fished coins or small toys out of pockets recently.
A clean filter prevents not just F9E1 but also smells, mould growth on the filter housing, and pump strain.
