Lid
Maytag Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Maytag washer Lid is the lid-left-open code.
Maytag's exact wording: 'If the display shows a lid (Lid opened), the washer lid was left open.'
This isn't a fault — it's the washer telling you that the lid was opened mid-cycle (or never fully closed at the start).
Closing the lid normally clears it.
But there's a 10-minute time limit: leave it open longer than that and the cycle resets.
Affected Models
- Maytag Bravos and Bravos XL top-load washers (MVWB, MVWX series)
- Maytag Centennial top-load washers (MVWC series)
- Maytag Commercial-Grade top-load washers (MVW series)
- Other Maytag top-load HE washers (front-load Maytag washers have a door, not a lid, and use different codes)
- Same Lid code appears on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Amana top-load washers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Lid opened mid-cycle to add an item and left open
- Lid not closed firmly enough at cycle start — sensor reads it as open
- Cycle paused with the lid up to inspect a load
- Lid striker damaged or missing — washer can't sense it's closed even when it is
- Lid sensor fault (rare — see service if the lid is clearly closed)
How to Fix It
-
Close the lid firmly.
Maytag's first step: 'Close the lid to clear the display.'
Push the lid down firmly — a gentle close may not register on the lid sensor.
The display should clear and the cycle should resume from where it paused. -
Know the 10-minute rule.
Maytag is explicit: 'If the lid is left open for more than 10 minutes, the cycle will reset, and the water in the washer will drain.'
If you wandered off mid-load and the cycle has reset and drained, you'll need to restart the cycle. -
Restart without adding more detergent.
Maytag specifically warns against double-dosing on restart: 'If the washer has drained, start the cycle over. Do not add more detergent; the clothing should already be penetrated with water and detergent.'
Just press Start with no extra detergent. -
Check the lid striker.
If you've closed the lid firmly and the display still says Lid, look at the small plastic peg on the underside of the lid.
This is the lid striker — it pushes into the sensor when the lid closes.
If it's broken, missing, or shifted, the washer thinks the lid is still open even when it isn't.
When to Call a Professional
Lid is owner-fixable by closing the lid.
Only call service if the lid is fully closed, the striker is present and undamaged, and the washer still shows 'Lid' on the display.
Frequently Asked Questions
I lost track and left the lid open for 20 minutes — did I damage anything?
No, the drain-and-reset is a designed protection routine, not a failure.
Maytag specifically built the 10-minute timeout so soapy water doesn't sit on clothing indefinitely, which would mark fabrics and risk mildew.
The clothes are still wet and already have detergent in them, so just restart the cycle (without adding more detergent) and the wash completes normally.
