F8E1
Whirlpool Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
F8E1 means the Whirlpool washer detected insufficient water entering the drum.
Check that both water supply taps are fully open and the inlet hose is not kinked.
How to Fix It
-
Check the water supply taps
Locate the hot and cold water supply taps behind the washer.
Both should be fully open (turned anti-clockwise as far as they go).
Partially closed taps reduce water pressure and trigger F8E1. -
Check the inlet hoses
Inspect both inlet hoses for kinks, sharp bends, or crushing.
Straighten any kinked sections and ensure the hoses are not pinched behind the machine. -
Clean the inlet hose filters
Unscrew the inlet hoses from the back of the machine (turn off the supply taps first).
Inside each connection port there is a small mesh filter screen.
Remove and rinse these filters under running water. -
Check water pressure
Run the tap connected to the washing machine supply.
Adequate pressure should produce a strong flow.
Low water pressure from the mains can prevent the washer from filling quickly enough. -
Test the inlet valve
If water pressure and hoses are fine, the water inlet solenoid valve may be faulty.
This requires a multimeter to test for continuity.
A failed valve produces no clicking sound when a fill cycle begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does F8E1 mean on a Whirlpool washing machine?
F8E1 means the machine timed out waiting for the drum to fill.
The control board did not detect enough water entering within the expected time.
Can low water pressure cause F8E1?
Yes — Whirlpool washers require a minimum water pressure of around 20 psi.
Very low mains pressure or a partially closed tap triggers F8E1 even when the supply is connected.
How do I clear F8E1 after fixing the water supply?
After restoring the water supply, press CANCEL or START to restart the cycle.
The washer will attempt to fill again.
If it fills normally, F8E1 will not reappear.
