E5
Omron Blood Pressure Monitor
Severity: MinorWhat it means
E5 means the cuff pressure went above the maximum safe level (usually 299 mmHg) before the monitor could complete the reading.
This is almost always caused by a cuff that is too small or applied incorrectly.
Affected Models
- Omron M2
- Omron M3
- Omron M6
- Omron HEM-7120
- Omron HEM-7156
Common Causes
- Cuff too small for the arm circumference
- Cuff applied too loosely — monitor keeps pumping to compensate
- Movement causing false pressure spike
- Kinked or blocked air tube
- Internal cuff pump fault (rare)
How to Fix It
-
Check your arm circumference and use the correct cuff size.
Omron cuffs come in Small (17–22 cm), Medium (22–32 cm), and Large (32–42 cm).
Using a small cuff on a large arm is the most common cause of E5. -
Ensure the cuff is applied snugly — not loosely.
A loose cuff causes the pump to over-inflate trying to get a seal.
You should only be able to slip two fingers under the cuff. -
Check the tube for kinks.
Bend or blockage in the tube traps air and causes pressure to spike.
-
Sit still and try again.
Movement during inflation can trigger E5 on some models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could E5 mean my blood pressure is dangerously high?
Unlikely — E5 is a device error, not a blood pressure reading.
It means the cuff over-inflated, not that your BP is above 299 mmHg.
Fix the cuff issue and re-measure.
